I am thrilled to be teaching Printmaking here at da Vinci Middle School! I look forward to meeting each of you.
Students will need a blank page sketchbook by the end of the week (either hard bound or spiral bound). Columbia Art Supply on 15th and Burnside has some great discounts. If this is a hardship please send me an e-mail and I will help.
Printmaking is a process of making images that can be reproduced. Over the course of the year, students will learn 4 types of printmaking, including monotype, relief, intaglio, and screen printing. Monotype is essentially a painting that is created and then transferred to paper. They are original and direct. Relief printing involves a surface that is carved into and the ink is rolled on the remaining areas. Intaglio involves a surface where the ink goes into areas that are scratched into a surface. Screen printing provides an opportunity to create stencils that are attached to a fine mesh screen, which allows ink to be spread in the openings. Students will learn techniques for making all forms of printmaking.
We will be working with non-toxic water based inks, however the inks can stain clothing. I will teach students how to take care of the studio. If students wear special clothing I ask that they bring dress down clothes to throw on over the top. Please help students locate a work shirt that can be stored in their locker for days they feel an over shirt is needed.
Our goal in the visual arts department is to have a gallery show each quarter. These shows provide a place for students to have a stage for others to appreciate their work. We will have a Gallery Opening with each show. Parent participation is very helpful in hanging the shows and providing refreshments for the after school Gallery Openings. Please let me know if you would like to volunteer this year.
All students are also strongly encouraged to enter their artwork into the 2015 Scholastic Art Awards. Please visit this link for more information about Scholastic.
Thank you for the ongoing support of our art classes. In order to purchase the supplies we need for this class, there is a $20 student fee due by the end of the week.
Thank you for helping make da Vinci the Best middle school in the world.
